  NIIW/TIM PRESS CONFERENCE & CHILDREN'S EVENT

NIIW 2005 Press Conference and Children’s Event
A Huge Success!

On Tuesday, April 26, the staff and children at Neighborhood House Association (NHA) Miller Head Start eagerly welcomed visitors for festivities marking the National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW), April 24-April 30, 2005, and the statewide Toddler Immunization Month (TIM), May 2005. Attendees included County of San Diego Board of Supervisors Chairwoman, Pam Slater-Price, County of San Diego; Dr. Wilma Wooten, Deputy Public Health Officer for the County of San Diego, representatives from Neighborhood House Association, California Distance Learning Health Network (CDLHN), and other visiting dignitaries and community members.

As part of the 2005 NIIW and TIM celebration, the County of San Diego HHSA Immunization Branch partnered with CDLHN and Neighborhood House Association's Miller Head Start to stage a press conference and educational event in the Tierrasanta area with the slogan, "It's Not Magic, It's Immunizations!" In addition to promoting the importance of childhood immunizations, the event celebrated 50 years of immunization success with the polio vaccine and the dramatic reduction of measles. The celebration began with a press conference facilitated by Violet Macias, CDLHN’s Executive Director. The conference included statements on the importance of immunizations to protect children’s health by Supervisor Pam Slater-Price, Deputy Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten, Barbara Fielding of Neighborhood House Association and a very moving presentation by Sara Fainstein, a San Diego resident and polio survivor, on the importance of continued immunization against polio until its global eradication.

Following the press conference, attendees enjoyed a charming musical performance. The children of Miller Head Start, all between the ages of 4 and 5, sang the immunization song entitled, “Spots that are Red and Legs like Lead”, written by Jan Campana, Public Health Nurse with the County of San Diego HHSA Immunization Branch. Some of the children dressed up as doctors and nurses, others had “red spots” with the measles, and some had “legs like lead” with foil wrapped around their legs, representing polio. The song emphasized the importance of getting shots to protect them from polio and measles.

As in past years, CDLHN was a key partner in preparing for and staging the press conference and children’s event. In addition to their management of the statewide NIIW campaign, CDLHN staff provided vital organizational and technical coordination and support to our local effort, working tirelessly to promote the events and ensure their success.

The staff at NHA Miller Head Start began preparing the children for their television debut in mid-March by reading them vaccine-themed books, creating artwork for the event and learning the immunization song. The song was such a hit it was translated into 3 other languages: Spanish, Chinese and Japanese (see links below).

This event was truly successful in large part due to the collaborative public-private partnership created to celebrate the success of vaccines. Together, we all can, and do, make a difference!
