Selective
Review is conducted every spring and provides information on compliance
with the California School Immunization Law by schools and child
care centers. Local health department staff visited 111 randomly
selected schools and childcare facilities during the months of February
- June, interviewed staff and assessed each student’s California
School Immunization Record (Blue Card). The data collected during
the assessment is used to validate the annual Fall Immunization
Assessment report submitted by childcare facilities and schools
to the County of San Diego Immunization Branch and the State of
California Department of Health Services Immunization Branch. The
visits also provided an opportunity to educate school and childcare
staff regarding the requirements and to emphasize the importance
of following up on students who are missing immunizations.
The Selective Review process allows us to meet the school staff
and gather valuable information through the Kindergarten Retrospective
Survey (review of kindergarten Blue Cards). The results are used
to determine immunization coverage among California’s children,
by checking to see if they had received recommended immunizations
by age 2. The information collected also helps shape the focus of
health promotion campaigns. Results for Selective Review 2005 will
be announced in the fall. The results of the 2004 Selective Review
are available by visiting the California
Department of Health Services Immunization Branch,
Immunization Levels in Child Care and Schools.
It takes a lot of hard work and commitment from school staff to
make sure all children enrolled meet the immunization requirements.
The County of San Diego Immunization Branch recognized schools that
achieved 100% compliance with the California School Immunization
Law with a letter and Certificate of Outstanding Achievement. We
congratulate those schools on their efforts in making sure all their
enrolled students meet the California School Immunization Requirements.
