IMC 2007 Provider of the Year Awards

The San Diego Immunization Branch (SDIB) is pleased to announce CPCMG and Dr Marcos Borrero as Providers of the Year. These awards highlight providers who made an exceptional contribution to advancing immunizations in San Diego County. These two providers were selected for their exceptional efforts to improve immunization practices and increase immunization rates by implementing several quality improvement projects and employing the San Diego Immunization Registry.

Children’s Primary Care Medical Group (CPCMG) The management of CPCMG identified immunizations as a key area for quality improvement within their organization. CPCMG, in collaboration with SDIB, identified several areas in which to focus quality improvement efforts.

CPCMG’s Clinical Educator and SDIB staff conducted staff trainings for each office. The organization’s policies were revised to reflect new procedures. In addition, CPCMG is currently working to bring two additional offices online with the SDIR. Lastly, several new innovative procedures are being tested to assess feasibility and impact on immunization rates. These initiatives will increase the effectiveness and efficiency of CPCMG in providing immunizations and help ensure their patients are fully protected from vaccine preventable diseases.

Dr. Marcos Borrero and Staff
During the past year, Dr. Borrero has implemented several initiatives to improve immunization practices and rates in his office. The first initiative was implementation of the SDIR. His office has fully embraced use of the Registry. Through the registry, Dr. Borrero’s office records all childhood and adult immunizations, tracks vaccine inventory, and utilize the recall and reminder features to ensure children are up to date.

The result of Dr. Borrero and staff’s hard work is a marked increase in their immunization rates. The clinic staff also attended the Immunization Skills Institute trainings to increase their knowledge and improve their immunization practices. In addition, Dr. Borrero is working to improve the office adult immunizations practices. Dr. Borrero implemented recommendations to ensure their adult patients are protected from vaccine preventable diseases.

What is IMC?

For over seven years the San Diego County Immunization Program has offered a FREE Immunization Management Consultancy (IMC) service to San Diego County private providers. Participating providers have experienced a jump in immunization coverage rates - some exceeding the Healthy People 2010 objective of 80% coverage for 2-year olds.

We use the Clinical Assessment Software Application (CASA) developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to assess the single antigen immunization coverage rates for children 19-35.9 months. We do all the work: identify the sample population, abstract data, pull and re-file your charts.

Next we offer an in-service at YOUR practice to present results of your coverage rate assessment. Lunch is provided for all staff in attendance. A list of children 19-36 months of age that are missing immunizations is included to ease the patient recall process. Your Consultant will also identify your practice strengths and tailor specific strategies designed to help meet your practice’s immunization goals. Follow-up assessments are offered annually.

Practice-Specific Attention

Your Consultant has a variety of services including immunization workflow analysis and missed opportunity studies. Every practice is different. From patient population to staffing changes, insurance companies to HIPPAA regulations, we realize keeping track of immunization records, schedules and contraindications can be challenging. Utilize your Consultant between assessments for antigen-specific staff education, tips on how to approach parents that refuse immunizations, or assistance in implementing an effective reminder/recall system.

Material and Resources

IMC has access to the most up-to-date, language-specific, immunization materials for parents and staff. California Immunization Records, Pediatric and Adult Immunization Record and History summary forms for your charts, and reminder/recall postcards are just a few examples of the materials available for your practice - free of charge!

The IMC - SDIR Partnership

The San Diego Regional Immunization Registry (SDIR) is a secure, confidential web-based immunization information system. When you participate with IMC you have the additional benefit of an SDIR demonstration and opportunity to participate. Click here for more information about SDIR.
