Tetanus,
Tattoos and Tulips
Stepping on a rusty nail is not the only way you can get tetanus,
a potentially disabling and life threatening disease. Amateur piercing
and tattoos, a growing trend among teens and young adults, can lead
to many health risks, including tetanus. Recently, a 27-year-old woman
in California developed tetanus due to piercing her tongue. She had
received Td shots as a child but did not get any Td boosters, which
are recommended every 10 years. She was treated in the hospital but
still did not have full muscle control of her face 6 months later.
The garden is another
place you can get tetanus. Thirty-one percent of tetanus-related
wound or puncture injuries occur in gardens, yards and farms. Many
people 65 years and older are not up-to-date with their Td booster
and most of the reported tetanus deaths are among people 60 years
of age and older.
Tetanus continues to
be a threat and not just by stepping on a rusty nail. Protect yourself.
Get your Td booster every 10 years.
If it’s
been 10, do it again!
