The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) and
the National Coalition for Adult Immunization (NCAI) have joined
home improvement expert Bob Vila to educate the adult population about
the importance of becoming up-to-date on routine tetanus and diphtheria
vaccine boosters. The campaign "Power of 10" drives home
the message that it is important for adults to get a routine Tetanus/
Diphtheria booster shot every ten years. Many people do not realize
that the vaccine received during childhood does not protect them throughout
their entire life.
Everyone needs protection from tetanus. Tetanus bacteria are widely
present in the environment and can enter the body through any simple
wound - not just from stepping on a rusty nail! Even seemingly harmless
activities such as gardening or housework can expose a person to tetanus
if he or she gets a cut or scrape doing them.
The Power of 10 educational campaign focuses on tetanus and diphtheria
prevention with the goal of reversing some staggering statistics.
While more than half of adults are no longer protected against both
diseases, the problem gets even worse with age - 70 percent of people
over age 70 lack immunity to these diseases.
